Post-Abortion Information

Women’s Health Services provides a 24-hour answering service for emergencies. For non-emergency concerns, call during regular business hours: Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m., and Saturday, 7:30 a.m.–1:00 p.m.

Bleeding

Vaginal bleeding after an abortion is normal and varies by patient. Some patients have little or no bleeding, while others bleed lightly until their first period, usually four to eight weeks after the procedure.

You may have no bleeding for the first few days, followed by moderate to heavy bleeding three to five days after the procedure. This increase is often related to activity and may improve with reduced activity and rest. Passing blood clots is also normal.

When to Call:

  • Call us if you soak through more than one full-size maxi pad per hour for two consecutive hours.
  • Call us if you repeatedly pass clots larger than a lemon.
  • Call us if your period has not returned within eight weeks.

Cramps

Most patients experience intermittent cramping after the procedure, similar to menstrual cramps. A brief episode of intense cramping may occur when passing a clot.

When to Call:

  • Call us if cramping becomes constant pain or worsens over time.

Fever

A fever may indicate a developing infection.

When to Call:

  • Call us if your temperature is above 100.4 degrees.

Feelings After an Abortion

Many patients feel relief after an abortion, while some experience sadness or depression. These feelings may reflect both the experience itself and hormonal changes. Support from family and friends can be helpful.

If your feelings become overwhelming, consider speaking with a counselor or therapist. We can refer you to counselors, therapists, and hotlines that specialize in pregnancy and abortion-related support.

When to Call:

  • Call us if you would like a referral for emotional support resources.
